15 March 2017H2020 : Launching of “M-Cube” research project

The M-CUBE research project is coordinated by Aix Marseille University (AMU) and led by the Fresnel Institute and the Center for Magnetic Resonance in Biology and Medicine (CRMBM). M-CUBE has been selected by the European Commission and is funded for 4 years from the 1st of January, 2017.

M-CUBE project, entitled MetaMaterials antenna for ultra-high field MRI, is laureate of the “Future and Emerging Technologies-OPEN-1-2016-2017” European call for project. The FET-OPEN call is one of the H2020 programme’s most competitive calls. The success rate in the “Research and Innovation Action” category of this call is 4%. Only 22 projects have been selected from a total of 544 applications at the European level. It is worth noting that among the 22 laureates, 4 projects are coordinated by French universities.

FET-OPEN calls aim at funding collaborative projects from first class consortia that propose novel ideas for radically new technologies.

AMU coordinates the M-CUBE consortium which gathers 8 world-class academic actors and 2 very promising SMEs. M-Cube aims at changing the paradigm of High-Field and Ultra High-Field MRI antennas to offer much better insight of the human body and enable earlier detection of diseases and conditions. The main objective of the project is to go beyond the limits of existing clinical imaging using an MRI scanner and radically improve spatial and temporal resolutions on image quality. Indeed, current clinical use of High-field and Ultra High-Field MRI scanners is constrained by the lack of homogeneity of the resulting image and by constraints related to the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of the Radio Frequency (RF) fields associated with the magnetic resonance. To date, methods used to tackle image inhomogeneity and high SAR levels involve increasing the number of active RF antennas, which in turn renders these solutions both complex and expensive. The M-Cube solution relies on innovative systems using passive metamaterial structures to avoid multiple active elements. These systems are expected to make High-Field MRI fully diagnostically relevant for physicians. To achieve these results, the M-Cube consortium will develop a disruptive metamaterial antenna technology for high field and ultra high field MRIs. Physicists, medical doctors and industrial actors will work closely together for the duration of the project to create a “patient-centered” solution that will pave the way for more accurate diagnostics in the context of personalized medicine and will enable the earlier detection of diseases and other conditions.

+ M-CUBE Scientific leaders are Dr Stefan Enoch, Director of Fresnel Institute, and Dr Redha Abdeddaim, Professor IUT AMU-Institut Fresnel.

03 December 2012Book

Researchers of the laboratory "Metamaterials" P.A. Belov, A.A. Orlov and S.U. Kosulnikov have published the book "Subwavelength imaging. Overcoming the Diffraction Limit". The book is devoted to a new branch of physics related to the development and applications of metamaterials - artificial materials with electromagnetic properties which are not observed in the materials available in nature. The concept of metamaterials is a fundamentally new approach that allows you to design materials based on the properties are required. Using these artificial media with exotic electromagnetic properties it's possible to create the imaging device with subwavelength resolution not limited by the diffraction limit of the lens to allow the transmission and processing of images, which for a long time seemed insurmountable even theoretically.

14 November 2012Saint Petersburg Government Prize 2012

Nadezhda Lapshina has been awarded the Saint Petersburg Government Prize 2012.

08 November 2012Ultrafast antenna switch

The paper "Nonlinear metal–dielectric nanoantennas for light switching and routing" written by Roman Noskov and colleagues has been noticed in the new issue of Nature Photonics (vol. 6, 2012). A theoretical study has shed light on a hybrid metal–dielectric nanoantenna that allows for dynamic control over its scattering pattern. In particular, the radiation pattern can be reversed by varying the external field intensity, offering potential for ultrafast all optical switching. The system possesses a switching time of just 40 fs.

07 September 2012Congress Metamaterials'2012

The Sixth International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics – Metamaterials 2012 will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia on 17-22 September 2012. In previous years, the Congress took place in Italy (Rome, 2007), Spain (Pamplona, 2008), Great Britain (London, 2009), Germany (Karlsruhe, 2010), Spain (Barcelona, 2011). This year the Congress will be held in Russia for the first time!

The Congress will provide a unique forum to share the latest results of the metamaterials research in Europe and worldwide and bring together the engineering, physics, and material science communities working in the field of artificial electromagnetic materials and their applications from radio to optical frequencies.

The Congress is organized by the Metamorphose Virtual Institute and hosted by the National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO) and St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI".

24 August 2012Scientists from Russia and Australia create new metamaterial

Is it possible to create a cap of invisibility? Recent years scientists say: yes, if you have the special metamaterials. These objects with negative refractive index promise a revolution in optics. But a cap of invisibility is just one of the possibilities. Russian scientists have created panels that can make satellite dishes completely flat. This is just one of the effects of metamaterial which has different behaviour depending on the light.
